Tyres, wipers, lights and brakes, checked in fifteen minutes, no appointment, no purchase — for a fortnight every winter.
For two weeks in February we put two ramps aside and checked any car that turned up: tread depth, tyre dates and pressures, wiper condition, every bulb, brake pad thickness and fluid moisture. Fifteen minutes, no appointment, no obligation to buy anything.
Four hundred and six cars came through. A hundred and nineteen were driving on tyres below the legal tread limit, and thirty-one had brake fluid that had absorbed enough moisture to matter on a long descent. Everyone left with a printed sheet — including a list of what was fine, which is the half people never hear.
We fitted tyres for those who asked, at cost plus fitting for the clinic fortnight. Roughly half chose to have the work done elsewhere, which was always an acceptable outcome.
The clinic runs again next winter, and we have asked two other workshops in Ramallah to run their own. A hundred and nineteen sets of dangerous tyres is a number worth repeating out loud.
