A spectrophotometer reads your paint on three panels and mixes to that reading, so a repaired wing matches a sun-faded door rather than the factory code. Depth is checked after clear coat and recorded against the original.
Anything beyond a scuff is measured on the jig first. If a rail or mounting point has moved, it is straightened to factory dimensions and the sheet goes in your file — because the next buyer of your car deserves to see it too.
